What Is A Favicon, and Why Is It Important?

Colleagues in my office know that one of my biggest pet peeves is leaving the default WordPress logo as your favicon! 

So what is a favicon? And why is it important? 

A favicon is a small square image representing a website in web browsers. Typically, favicons feature a logo, the first letter of the company name, or an image that simply reflects the specifics of the website it represents. WordPress also calls these site icons!

While favicons may seem small and insignificant, having one can make a tremendous difference in user experience and online branding. Here are a few benefits: 

They allow users to find a necessary page much more quicker and easier.

Favicons are a must-have in website design because it saves users their most precious resource — time! Favicons help users quickly match every browser tab with a specific website. And if you‘re like me and tend to keep a million tabs open simultaneously — unable to read their full names — favicons are your best friend and make finding the website you need much more effortless.

They support brand awareness and recognizability.

Favicons work the same way as logos do for physical products or places. They are a unique and catchy element that enables users to find or notice the digital product, aka website, out of the crowd. Users who see the icon repeatedly will subconsciously remember the image. This action ultimately supports brand awareness and increases brand recognizability. Check out

As you know, websites with a high click-through rate and average duration always get the upper hand in rankings. A website with Favicon on the search result is bound to get more clicks than a website that doesn’t.
